Mute Presence

In this residency, participants will consider communication as a material site. When so defined, this “site” - rather than merely creating or facilitating "understanding"- instead becomes a locus where we can enact translations and transformations.

Transportation:

The Spring and Summer residency will be hosted by Contemporary Artist Center (CAC) in North Adams, MA. It's a 2.5 hour drive from Boston or a 1 hour drive from Albany. If you are flying in, the closest airport is Albany, NY. The Center for Visual Culture will run a van from Albany Airport to North Adams at the start and end of each residency. Also, the Peter Pan Bus makes daily trips to Williamstown (near North Adams) from Boston and New York.

Housing: The living area of Contemporary Artist Center is located in the historic Beaver Mill, a 130,000 square feet, brick mill situated on 27 acres of woodland, adjoining the Natural Bridge State Park in the beautiful hills of the Berkshires. The large, industrial studios, galleries, and cafe have high ceilings, enormous windows, and ample room for spirited conversations or solitude, including double rooms, a full kitchen and showers.
Meals: During the residency, enjoy three meals a day prepared by our very own chef, in the comfort of the CAC in-house kitchen. Additionally, there is plenty of fridge space and cooking equipment for your use. Please let us know if you have any allergies.
Schedule: The residency begins on Monday and runs until the following Sunday. Generally, there are programmed events from 9 - 5 every day and salons or other social events in the evenings.
